During the 1980's I had the very good fortune to be posted to Ottawa for a year. We moved to the cities East End in a lovely area immediately adjacent to Canada's National Research Council. The very first night of our arrival to Ottawa with 5 children and three adults in tow, all famished, we asked friends if there was a deli anywhere nearby were we could all get fed. It was much to our surprise and then to our joy that we were referred to Nate's Deli, downtown. We had been living in Chicago for many years preceding that night and we had all but forgotten what 'haimishcheh' Canadian (if there is such a thing) deli tasted like. It didn't take very long for our taste buds to be resurrected that late September night at Nate's. For the year that followed, if we weren't in Montreal or Toronto for visits, it was off to Nate's at least once a month for delicious home-style deli. Thanks Mr. Smith - it was great fun and now it's a great memory.

It was a regular stop of mine any time I went to Ottawa. In 1967 I went every weekend when I was not working at Expo and eating Montreal deli. I took mom there in the 70's and I had the "Polski Special" which was a smoked meat sandwich with a slice of pickled red pimento pepper. It was great. It is too bad that it is closing. Are they waiting for me to get back to Ottawa more often? My hat is off to Mr. Smith for his wonderful charitable work.
We took you there the time we went to Ottawa when you shook the PM's hand and didn't wash your hand for a week. You probably had a hot dog or latkes in those days.
