Amen!
Finally someone from the Orthodox establishment speaks out about human rights, even if they're not Jewish humans. This lack of standing up for universality in rights from the orthodox establishment is what causes many other Jews to feel alienated from Orthodoxy.

Great piece--and I agree with Lauren's post, too. I may be a bit of a hypocrite here, since I don't keep Kosher or pretend to, and I do not consider myself particularly religious or observant, but all Jews should be concerned when human rights abuses are made in our name--in the name of maintaining Jewish laws. The notion of not being just for oneself goes all the way back to Hillel. I don't want to rush to judgment, but if these allegations hold true, the entire Jewish community needs to make substantial reparations to the families who have been victimized.

BTW, I always wondered why Agriprocessors' products always seemed cheaper than other Kosher meats in the supermarket. Now I know why.

Now that is what I like to see -- a proper ethical response to the situation. Meat preparation practices have been declining in both kosher and non-kosher plants -- we need to confront the issues of low inspection enforcement on the Fed level as well as ethical practice and treatment of unqualified immigrant employees.

Rubashkin family’s massive plant.....

I'm sure the working conditions were par for the course for large meat processors. It is a nasty job with mostly (90%) immigrants working them. Some are illegal and they were arrested and many will be deported I suppose. Working at Rubashkin is better than working in Mexico or Guatemala

Has the plant reopened?
When it does I'm sure it will be better run and with a legal immigrant workforce

I have been previously scouting for some time to get a smart content articles relating to this one idea . Looking out in Yahoo and google I finally stumbled upon this incredible website. Reading this information I am relieved to express that I get a positive uncanny feeling I came across just what I was looking for. I most certainly will make sure to don't forget this blog and give it a look consistently.
