Kaufman’s bounty spills over

In the past I’ve written some fine things about Kaufman’s Bakery and Deli in Skokie, Illinois and for good reason. The Dworkin family are solid, sweet, deli loving folks who keep the tradition alive, stay loyal to their customers, and make some incredibly delicious foods, including ryes, cookies, and gefilte fish to die for.

So it should come as no surprise that this small deli has inspired and helped many to start their own deli dreams. There’s Goldman’s in Scottsdale, Arizona and now there’s a new one in Chicagoland as well.

Bergstein’s is the latest deli to be influenced by Kaufman’s. Both Michael Mesirow and Bill Davis, who manage the place, trained for six months at Kaufman’s before venturing on their own. With homemade appetizing and corned beef from Chicago’s venerable Manny’s, it should be a natural hit with the area’s suburban deli lovers. After all, Chicago is a town of eaters. I wish them all the best of luck and suggest that all my Chicago deli fans go and check it out.

Bergstein’s NY deli is located at

Chicago Heights, IL 60411

But of course, no mention of Kaufman’s would be complete without discussing my favorite Jewish baker, the ever lovable Herb Fingerhut. Since relaunching his family’s Fingerhut Bakery via Kaufman’s, the great Herb has done more than bake stellar ryes and challah. He’s now put out a cookbook and autobiography called “As the Oven Turns on at… Chas. Fingerhut Bakery”

As Herb says:

“Enjoy a whimsical look at my life growing up in our baking family as well as a unique cookbook which includes over 90 recipes of products baked at Chas. Fingerhut Bakeries throughout the years.
You are sure to enjoy the full color pictures of all the products in this book, CFB publications, Fingerhut Family Tree (1700′s – 2008) and over 50 black and white family/bakery photos dating back over 90 years. And for those of you that love to cook as well as bake, you will also be able to enjoy family recipes handed down for generations.”

True to form, our friend Herb is also including a sweet deal for anyone that wants an advance copy. If you check out his site www.fingerhutbakery.com you can contact him and order. Included in the deal is the following:

“As The Oven Turns At… Chas. Fingerhut Bakery”
which also includes…
1 Babi RyeTM Bread, 1 Braided Houska and 12 Kolacky
~ ~ ~
Delivery included (48 states/ground) after 12/1/ 2008
$74.95
This offer is for all books ordered and paid by 11/15/2008

Bread, cookies, recipes, memories, deli…mmmm this sounds too good to be true.

Here’s Herb making his infamous Reuben Strudel back in 2007.
