Ah, Cel-Ray. I grew up drinking the stuff at my grandparents in Brooklyn in the 50s and 60s, so it's never seemed weird to me, the way it does to people who only discover it late in life. For them, I understand that it can only be an acquired taste, at best.

Although I'll sometimes have a Coke or Dr. Brown's excellent Black Cherry for variety, there's nothing like Cel-Ray to accompany a deli sandwich. I'm grateful that it survives, wish that it were more widely available and can only agree that it's a shame it isn't still made with sugar.

P.S.: Speaking of sucrose and deli food, check out the recently added organic version of Heinz ketchup, which is made with sugar instead of corn syrup. The flavor is distinctly brighter and clearer. It's the ketchup of your youth reborn and really perks up french fries.

I'm not a big fan of most of Dr. Brown's sodas. They're all rather ho-hum. I know a lot of people like their black cherry, but most people I've had do a taste test between it and Boylan's end up choosing the Boylan.

However, Cel-Ray is actually interesting at least. I'm sure someone could do a better version, but until that comes along, I'm happy to drink it on occasion. Although, I do have a secret: hold your knows. The taste is nice, but the smell is misleading.

I've always preferred Dr. Brown's Black Cherry (now, alas, Diet version) with my pastrami, corned beef or tongue at a deli, David, as I am another who has never developed the taste for Cel-Ray. It's just another cultural marker that I never embraced, like chopped liver or borscht.

Sarah and I have been huge fans of Cel Ray for a while. We are huge fans. Clearly the best of the Dr. Brown's line with Cream Soda being second and Black Cherry being a close third.

Best deli's in my opinion:
Bay Cities Italian Deli (not Jewish but best ever)
Schwartz's (Montreal)
Canter's Deli (LA)
Zingerman's Deli (Ann Arbor)
