David

Now that you've had your food orgasm at Kenny & Zuke's, let me tell you that I'm really pissed off that you beat me there. I live just a few hundred miles away, and haven't been to K&Z yet. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, as they say.

Portland is too far from my house for a day trip, and as my wife has been ill we haven't been able to go for an overnighter.

All the food photos look great! I've been salivating for the past half hour!

I will try to get there soon, however. The state of Washington is a deli wasteland. See reports of the three Seattle area delis on my website www.thecowlesreport.com.

I'm still writing my cookbook for making deli food at home. I finally perfected the rye bread, after trying dozens of different recipes over the past three years that had great flavor, but were too dense and crumbly.

I'll stack my homemade pastrami up against any pastrami in the country. Have you had a chance to try the pastrami kit I sent you yet?

Put me down for the first copy of your book--autographed, of course!

WHen I was a kid in New York, whole smoked tongue was a weekly purchase. Is it possible to buy this in Portland today and, if so, how much would it cost?

Not only was it the driest pastrami sandwich I've ever had, but it actually made me ill. Kenny & Zuke's was a huge disappointment for me. Pastrami should be made from the navel, not the brisket!

First time I went here, probably 2009, it was great.

Seond time I went there, probably a year later, it was Ok.

Third time I went here, definitely 2010, both the service and the food were the worst of any downtown eatery in Portland - The Roxy included. But as they made very clear then, they don't care what you think. The staff are there for their own amusement and will treat you to all of the resentment they can muster and if that does not amuse you then you don't get it.
