can a real corned beef on rye be found in a town of twenty thousand, housing a Jewish population of five hundred, three hundred miles north of NYC ? yes; once ! As a fundraiser, the Rutland Jewish Center built a wooden "set", well hung with salami; the counter awash in bowls of fresh - from - the barrel pickles, slaw, and other kosheratta. Carved from the membership were a half dill dozen of the more obnoxious altacockers who were dispatched to the carving station to pile on the"not too lean". The crustiest Sisterhood bulibusta took charge of the cash drawer. The customer base performed beautifully---elbowing friends and family from the front of the line, all the while screaming instructions to the harried staff on sandwich construction. One old lady, standing +/- 4' 11" complained that the counter was too high. "This is not a nursing home" she was informed by a slicer with a mouth full of pastrami tailings. Call it theater deli---one night only
