Write in Delis in Philly and Jersey
Posted in: Uncategorized
I realized this week that it was just over a year ago when I finished my deli journey around the United States. In two months, and over 10,000 miles, I drove from Toronto to Los Angeles, over to Miami, and back home, hitting as many delis as I could along the way. I probably went to over 200 delis, though I’ve yet to formally count them all. I had very little free time, drove like mad, and ate like a fiend. But even then, I missed quite a lot. Geography deprived me of delis in Minnesota and the Pacific Northwest. And in the end, with Passover approaching, I had to cut the trip short and head back home straight from DC. So I missed out on several key deli markets, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Boston.
Some of you have noticed this, and two recently wrote in to recommend delis in those areas.
Today I got an email from Randall, who had recently visited Hershel’s Deli in the Reading Terminal Market. Hershel’s opened in the past few years, and is similar to other such market based delis, like the I Love New York Deli in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, and Friedman’s Kosher in New York’s Chelsea Market. It makes perfect sense to open up a great deli in a building dedicated to food. Their pastrami is hand cut, and I am told home cured. And while I can’t specifically comment on the food from Hershel’s, Randall and others tell me it’s great. There’s also some good info HERE.

Another reader named Stephen came upon the blog last week when I featured the enormous sandwiches of Harold’s in New Jersey. He wanted to know why I hadn’t featured more NJ delis, and has shared with me a list of his favorites. I encourage all of you to hit up the garden state and check out these temples of deliciousness.
