Save the Deli

Who Wants to Sell My Book?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

As many or most of you know, my book, Save the Deli, which is like this blog only more papery and awesome, will be published this October by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (US) and McClelland and Stewart (Canada). It will be sold in wide release at major and independent bookstores, and over the webbernet.

But where I’d really like to see it sold is over the counter of Jewish delicatessens everywhere. This book is about delis, first and foremost, and it makes sense that they should be available right in the places I’m writing about. So consider this a call to all you delis out there. If you’re interested in stocking copies of Save the Deli (which you can sell for a percentage of the profits), please let me know. If you’d like to host an event in your community, have a reading, or do a Save the Deli themed night in the fall and winter, please also let me know. (more…)

Noshville Katz

Ok, I’ll admit it, the posting’s been a bit dreary lately with all the talk of closings, deaths, and the like. Here’s a little pick me up. No need to explain this beauty:

Save the Deli on “Kenny vs. Spenny”

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Of of my brother’s favorite shows, and one of the sickest out there, is Kenny vs. Spenny, a quasi reality show where two roommates try to outdo each other in sweet, tasteless competitions. My friend Tracy was a producer on it, and when the topic was “Who Can Be a Better Jew?”, I got the call for the deli segment. We did it at Moe Pancer’s, in Toronto, where the show’s filmed. Kenny Hotz is actually a deli maven with few equals. He’s been to delis far and wide, has a tongue that can pick out the pickles, and is a lover of the whole deli culture.

The clip’s below. My brief appearance is at the end, around the 8:30 mark.

Smorgasbord Day

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Sometimes, especially after you’ve been screaming “Woooo Obama” in the streets until 2:30 AM, you just want to phone in your blog post.
I’ve had a whole bunch of emails about different deli projects piling up in my inbox, so I’m going to do my best to compile them into one big fat post today.

Vote Deli

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Due to a strict editorial policy, Save the Deli cannot endorse any candidate for President. That and the fact that I’m Canadian.

But I’ll let the following picture speak for itself.

This is taken in Manny’s Deli in Chicago. Does he look like he’s enjoying that corned beef?

Hungry Magazine: Lowenstein’s Revenge

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I want to pass along a great article that one of you sent me recently. “Lowenstein’s Revenge”, appears in the online Hungry Magazine. I think it speaks to many of our attachments, hopes, fears, and feelings towards the delis in our lives. Our relationship with them occurs over many years, and as they become woven into the fabric of our routine, so too does that relationship become more complicated. Either way, it’s a wonderful nostalgic tale of New York delis over many years. Enjoy. (more…)

Toronto Life: Here’s the Beef

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I completely forgot to post this. Last month I had an article in Toronto Life about deli in the city. A little hometown pride.

HERE’S THE BEEF
Montreal, schmontreal. Toronto knows a thing or two about smoked meat, too
By David Sax

Ever since 30,000 Montrealers arrived in the 1970s, they’ve been kvetching that there’s no decent Jewish deli in this charcuterie-crazed town. The latest deli man to counter that narrow-minded view is Zane Caplansky, who opened Caplansky’s Deli this summer in the Monarch Tavern. In the first few weeks, he sold out of meat twice and was instantly hailed as a smoked meat messiah. It’s time to put aside comparisons—and niggling thoughts of Maple Leaf’s “Fast Food Nation” nightmare. Here are five pickled meats that Toronto does better than anyone else. (more…)

Kaufman’s bounty spills over

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

In the past I’ve written some fine things about Kaufman’s Bakery and Deli in Skokie, Illinois and for good reason. The Dworkin family are solid, sweet, deli loving folks who keep the tradition alive, stay loyal to their customers, and make some incredibly delicious foods, including ryes, cookies, and gefilte fish to die for. New York’s New York Jews

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

courtesy of nymag.com

I’ve arrived in Brooklyn, and am still in the midst of settling down, though Friday’s stellar, gut busting dinner at the 2nd Ave Deli certainly helped. Oh man I’m going to love it here.

Anyway, my good friend Chris Farber pointed me to an excellent article on New York Jews in New York Magazine, written last week by David Samuels. “How Success Ruined the New York Jew” is a prophetic look of the rise of the Jewish outsider in this city to an insider whose very power has cost him his character. This is a theme I touch upon in the book, assimilation and what not, and Samuels illustrates this beautifully:

“Elegy” with a little help from us

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Friday is always a good film day, especially if it’s raining (as it is this summer), and I’d recommend you go check out Elegy, a new film starring Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley. Based on a Philip Roth story (old man falls for young woman, fears age, etc…), it’s supposedly smart, intelligent, complicated, and yes, filled with a few choice scenes of senora Cruz in the buff. Such is lovely life.
